If you’ve taken an interest in marijuana edibles, you’ll definitely want to learn how to make cannabutter. Cannabutter is one of the easiest ways to infuse your brownies, cookies, and other homemade dishes with cannabis. So let’s discuss how to make the best cannabutter on your own:

Prepping the Cannabis

You should plan on using one ounce of cannabis per pound of butter that you intend to make. The first step is to grind your bud lightly so that you can easily spread it out over a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. You don’t want to grind it too finely because you want to filter out the flakes later on.

Set your oven to 225 degrees and place the baking sheet in the oven for an hour. When it cools, break up any large chunks that are still remaining. (Side note: You may skip this step if you are short on time, but drying the plant matter is how to make the most potent cannabutter.)

Adding the Cannabis to the Butter

Next, in a large pot, boil 4 cups of water. Add four sticks (1 pound) of butter to the water and let it begin melting.

Then add your dried bud to the water. You’ll notice that the cannabis floats on top at first – just make sure it doesn’t overflow. Turn the heat down to a medium-low setting so that the water is gently bubbling. Let this cook for about 90 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Making the CannaButter

Get a large bowl and cover it with two layers of cheesecloth. Pour the hot liquid into the cheesecloth and let the liquid butter strain through while the flakes of bud are separated. Use a spatula to gently press the solid matter against the sides of the bowl. This will wring out any excess liquid and cannabinoil that is trapped in the mush.

Discard the cheesecloth with the waste and place the bowl in the fridge overnight.

Harvesting the Butter

As the liquid cools overnight it will separate into parts. The butter you’re looking for will rise to the top, while the excess water and any extra flakes of bud will settle to the bottom. You can use a spatula or knife to gently remove the butter from the bowl without dropping it into the water below. You can store the butter in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for several months.
