Who’s heard of dabbing? No not the Cam Newton signature celebration move, but the process of smoking wax, shatter, crumble, etc. which are types of cannabis concentrates. More info on the types of dabs can be found here. Dabbing is the next level way to smoke cannabis above and beyond the typical flower smoke via a pipe, bong, or joint, etc. The benefits of smoking concentrates vs. traditional flower are many, but the most common one is that due to the high THC concentration in the products just a “dab will do you” meaning a little bit goes a long way. Concentrates are basically concentrated THC, the typical flower tests anywhere from 15-30% THC, and concentrates can get up as high as 90%, which exemplifies the fact that you only need a little! Here is what you will need:
A dab rig is a smaller waterpipe or bong, somewhere in between a bubbler and a small traditional bong in size. Typically a dedicated dab rig will have a good perculator to distribute the smoke evenly through the water to cool it, and there are many options out there.
A banger is the “bowl” piece that you heat up to put the concentrate in and allow it to vaporize/ smoke. Typically made out of quartz, glass, ceramic, or titanium, this is the piece that makes the dab rig different from a traditional bowl in that it is not for smoking flower.
Torch or Enail
To heat the banger to the extreme temps needed to vaporize the dab, you will need a torch or Enail. A torch is usually more affordable and is used to flame heat the banger to the desired temp. Accuracy is somewhat lacking as you essentially wait to let the glass or titanium cool before you take your dab. An electronic nail or Enail is an electronic heating element with a controller that allows you to set the exact temperature you want to dab at which provides a much more consistent dabbing experience. Many customers prefer the Enail over using a torch as it is much easier and accurate, and there is no need to reheat in between dabs as it always stays at the temperature you set.
Types of Dabbing
The two main types of dabbing are low temp and high temp. This refers to the temperature you take your dab at. Typically right around 710 degrees is a starting point, and lower or higher from there dictates either low temp or high temp. Each method has unique benefits; a low temp dabs allow you to experience the terpenes and true flavor of the concentrates while leaving some waste material that doesn’t completely burn and high temp dabs provide a lot more smoke and no waste due to the product being completely vaporized at the higher temperature. High temp dabs tend to be more on the harsh side due to the temperature of the smoke you are inhaling whereas low temp dabs are not as harsh and a lot more flavorful.
Dab Tool and Carb Cap
The dab tool is a very important part of your dabbing experience. Most concentrates are extremely sticky and cannot be handled by bare hands, and this is where the tool comes in. Typically a metal or glass stick is used to grab a piece of concentrate and put it in the banger. Since just a little goes a long way, the small stick is the best tool to use. The carb cap is a cap that goes over the banger and has a carb hole in it. After you place the concentrate in the banger, you put the carb cap on top, and it concentrates the smoke produced to thicken it and provide a better hit.
How Do You Dab?
The process of dabbing is very simple. First select your preferred concentrate to be it wax, shatter, crumble, oil, etc. Next, you heat your banger either using a torch or Enail to the desired temperature. Then, using your dab tool, you place the amount you want to dab into the banger, cover it with the carb cap, and inhale. One thing to keep in mind due to the smaller size of most rigs is that you don’t need to power vacuum lung the inhale you want to make sure you get all of the smoke and sometimes it takes awhile. A slow and steady inhale is the way to go.
